HCA, Hospital Corporation of America Certified Nursing Assistant/Unit Secretary PRN in St Petersburg, Florida


The Certified Nursing Assistant will perform patient care activities under the direction of the professional nurse in accordance with the established methods/policies/procedures of the patient care services areas and the hospital. The Unit Secretary is responsible for performing general receptionist, clerical, and communication patient duties in the patient service area under the direction of the unit Director, Coordinator(s), and Registered Nurse Team Leaders. He/she functions as the center of communication for the designated unit and maintains a neat, organized, and safe working environment.

Description of Work:

  • Ability to work cooperatively with hospital staff

  • Handle frequent interruptions

  • Adapt to changes in workload and work schedule

  • Establish priorities; foster team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members communicate effectively (verbal and written)

  • Ability to meet the care needs of ages of customers

  • Demonstrates skill and accuracy in collecting and inputting data into hospital computer system as relevant to position

  • Maintains security, confidentiality and integrity of patient medical information

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all policies and procedures and ability to reference them from appropriate manuals

  • Identifies patients at risk for skin breakdown, implements appropriate patient care and documents patient status, according to policy and procedures

  • Reports to the primary caregiver all observations concerning patient condition, ie: vital signs, change in mental status, skin condition, etc

  • Comply with the infection control policies and procedures including Body Substance isolation (BSI) and the Exposure Control Plan which reflects OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard to ensure a safe working environment for all

  • Assist other Team members in the performance of their assignments

  • Investigate and follow through on unusual orders or requests for service or information

  • Follow proper reporting procedures for actual or potential accidents and/or incidents so follow-up and/or prevention can occur

  • Report the need for service maintenance or repair of equipment and remove any faulty equipment from service

  • Provides a safe and clean environment for the patient

  • Participates in identifying issues in the work area and takes steps to resolve by utilizing appropriate resources

  • Reports those issues in the appropriate manner

  • Demonstrates knowledge of and supports Patient’s Bill of Rights; serves as patient advocate

  • Consistently demonstrate ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, such as reprioritizing work as necessary

  • Organize job functions and work area to be able to effectively complete varied assignments within established time frames

  • Consistently demonstrate ability to take the initiative to make decisions/choices without direct supervision

  • Adheres to Palms of HCA's Attendance Policy

  • Answer and refer telephone calls or other inquires to ensure accurate and timely communications are facilitated; identify yourself in a pleasant and positive manner; take responsibility for helping the caller

  • Demonstrates collaborative relationships and communicates effectively both verbally and by phone to all health team members to assure coordinated efforts in patient care

  • Accountable for the appropriate utilization of supplies

  • Assist patients, family members or other clients with concern and empathy; respect their confidentiality and privacy and communicate with them in a courteous and respectful manner

  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Performs various clerical duties relating to the updating and organizing of information on the nursing unit

  • Maintains chart order, chart accuracy, and chart current data

  • Fax and photocopy information as needed

  • Coordinate specific work tasks with other personnel within the unit as well as within other units and departments in order to ensure the smooth and efficient flow of information.

  • Respond to inquiries relating to his/her area within given timeframe's and within established policy

  • Process a variety of information for new admissions and readmissions

  • Demonstrates proficiency in applicable computer systems

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

  • Current Certified Nursing License required

  • Current BLS required
