The Optical Engineer shall lead the optical and opto-mechanical design of next-generation optical sub-systems for the creation and control of EUV radiation, specifically relating to CO2and 1┬Ám seed laser systems.

The Optical Engineer shall perform a variety of engineering tasks including specifying, designing, developing, analyzing, testing, troubleshooting and implementing into production optical sub-assemblies and modules. S/he develops specifications for optical modules aligned with system requirements, with input from other groups including systems, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering. S/he creates and evaluates optical and opto-mechanical designs against requirement specifications, including those of thin-film optical coatings. Subsequent activities may include analysis of optical effects due to stress and thermal analysis of mounted optics and opto-mechanical tolerancing, working closely with opto-mechanical engineering.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Validates concepts through breadboard builds and analysis
  • Propose and validate innovative solutions to challenging technical issues
  • Develop and review theoretical models
  • Rapidly turn around optical design solutions, including use of available off-the-shelf components
  • Report on project progress with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Supervise vendors and contractors for component and process development and quality issues
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Ability to translate, statistically analyze data and effectively report problems through written and/or graphical formats

  • Familiar with optical alignment methods and tools, including hands-on experience
  • Expert in optical design and analysis software (e.g. Zemax, FRED)
  • Experienced with leading and/or participating in design FMEA, PDR and CDR
  • Comfortable with hands-on opto-mechanical systems build and qualification, including assembly procedure development, testing and process improvement
  • Experienced with directing and working closely with other optical, opto-mechanical and mechanical engineers
  • Experience with the design of high-power laser systems and reflective focusing systems an advantage
  • Experience with optical designs operating in adverse thermal and/or vibrational environments preferred

Skills and Experience

Requires a degree in optical or related engineering discipline (advanced degree, e.g. MSc or PhD preferred) and a minimum of six years of experience in an applicable, related engineering technology field

  • Experience with semiconductor capital equipment preferred
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Familiarity with MS Project and Visio an advantage
  • Familiarity with optical thin film design and analysis software e.g. MacLeod an advantage
