Employment Status: Full time, "non-exempt", probationary position.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 6:00 am – 2:30 pm (with the possibility of converting to an alternate work schedule.

Incumbents in the Equipment Operation Series perform skilled driving of automobiles, trucks, buses and other vehicles defined as "buses". According to the California State Vehicle Code, incumbents may drive tractor-trailer rigs for hauling heavy loads or operate tractors, earthmoving and other special purpose mobile and vehicular equipment requiring special operating skills, methods and techniques for agricultural and grounds improvement projects. Typically, drivers and operators service and make minor adjustments and repairs to the vehicles they operate.
Incumbents in this series must involve driving or operating equipment for 50% or more of the assignment. Depending on the assignment, incumbents may be required to perform manual labor associated with the use of equipment. The three classifications defined in this series relate to the kind, size, or weight of vehicle operated and the classification of California State driver's license required.
Incumbents operate equipment and vehicles such as ½ ton to 4 ton, 2-axle trucks with up to 5-speed transmissions.
This position is responsible for the maintenance of all University athletic fields and adjoining grounds areas. Develops and implements plans for the successful maintenance of all athletic fields and adjoining grounds.
The incumbent will perform skilled driving and operation of equipment and vehicles requiring a Class C driver's license including ½ ton to 4 ton, 2-axle trucks with up to 5-speed transmissions; small wheel-type tractors, including those with special purpose attachments such as backhoes, mowers, buckets, blades, cultivators and rakes; powered grounds maintenance equipment such as rotary mowers, trench diggers, loaders (1/4 to 1 cubic yard or less bucket capacity), small rollers, forklifts typically under 3-ton capacity.
Duties typically include mowing grass areas, servicing and making minor repairs to the equipment operated and, depending on assignment may include the performance of heavy manual labor tasks related to loading and unloading of freight, gravel, rubbish and other materials. The incumbent will perform pre-operation servicing of equipment such as fuel and oil levels, lubrication, and minor adjustments. The incumbent will keep equipment operating at peak levels; and will also sharpen, back lap and balance blades and reels when necessary.
Manages and reviews irrigation systems performance and initiates changes and repairs when necessary.
Equivalent to one year of paid or regularly assigned driving experience in a job involving operating a delivery vehicle, truck, tractor, bus, or automotive maintenance equipment. Knowledge:
Applicants must possess a knowledge of the rules of safe driving and the provisions of the State of California Vehicle Code pertaining to operation of the vehicles previously described.
- Knowledge of the State of California General Industrial Safety orders related to the assigned tasks of the class, particularly those related to vehicle and equipment operation, construction methods and practices, and the lifting and moving of heavy loads.
- Working knowledge of turf grasses related to the area.
- Knowledge of basic turf care principles of fertilization, aeration, irrigation, mowing and pest control.
- Knowledge of pest management guidelines and standards.
Knowledge of basic electricity and hydraulics related to an irrigation system, including automatic valves and controllers. Abilities:

- The ability to follow manuals and guidelines pertaining to operation of Sate vehicles.
- The ability to load and unload vehicles correctly and safely is required.

- The ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with a diverse group of people is required.

Applicants must possess a Class C California driver's license and a good driving record as determined by check for violations recorded with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift, lower, push, and pull loads ranging in weight from 5-60 pounds; must be able to carry loads ranging from 20-50 pounds for distances up to 20 feet; must be capable of kneeling, reaching overhead, climbing stairs and ladders, walking, twisting, stooping, and bending; depending upon the project, employee may spend 20-50% of day sitting, 20-50% of day standing, 20-50% of day walking.
