The Library Series I will provide library support for faculty, students and staff using the Library. The incumbent will assist users to access and search electronic databases and locate educational materials.
The chosen candidate may be asked to assist with orientations for classes brought into the Library. He/she will also assist students on a daily basis to find needed library resources, such as books and articles. The incumbent will need to have a working knowledge of the online public access catalog, as well as Microsoft Office in order to assist students who are completing assignments.
The successful applicant will need a working knowledge of the CSUSB Library databases, an understanding of search techniques needed to locate appropriate research articles and books, and a working knowledge of software programs including: Microsoft Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Word.
This is the first level in the Library series position. Incumbents in both public and technical services perform tasks requiring a working knowledge of library procedures and policies as they relate to the work assignment. A working knowledge of department and library activities, policies, and procedures is necessary.
Experience in the Library qualifies as an incumbent. Experience should include work in library settings and demonstrated experience with computer software applications. The library series I will be expected to provide information to the library user that requires a working knowledge of library databases, and a general understanding of the fields of knowledge. The incumbent must have 2 to 3 years of a combination of library experience and the equivalent to a high school diploma. The Library Series 1 should have a working knowledge of the basic terminology used in library and technology fields, and an understanding of general bibliographic forms and structures, and especially as applied to library computer applications. The incumbent needs to demonstrate the ability to apply rules in accordance with policy, regulations and procedures under varying circumstances, as they relate to Pfau Library's electronic library resources available, and to provide these to library users. The ability to effectively assist students from all walks of life in a patient, kind manner is imperative to keep a pleasant learning environment for all users. This requires that the incumbent have verified work experience that required assisting others in a learning environment.
The successful incumbent will be able to demonstrate the ability of working with accuracy and paying attention to detail, and to use discretion and kindness in applying rules, regulations, and procedures. He/she will also need to demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, possess good writing skills, work cooperatively with others, and to be able to instruct computer and library users in a patient, supportive manner. Current employees or student assistants who qualify have preferred consideration.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.
