Typical Activities

Under general supervision, an Interpreter/Transliterator II will perform extremely difficult assignments requiring high levels of skilled interpreting and transliterating and certification of competence to support hearing-impaired students on advanced level (senior or graduate) classes or in complex, technical or highly specialized classes requiring group participation and recitation by the student. The Interpreter/Transliterator II provides support for students, which requires interaction in highly technical and specialized fields. The less technical or complex assignments in this class require only one certification; other assignments for highly complex and technical classes for advanced degrees or classes involving group participation and recitation by the student in technical subject matter require the full Comprehensive Skills Certificate used by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

Minimum Qualifications

The qualified applicant will have a thorough knowledge of American Sign Language and other sign systems and knowledge of special communications needs of hearing-impaired persons along with the knowledge of the National Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf Code of Ethics. The equivalent to a four-year degree and the equivalent to two years of related experience are essential. The knowledge of platform interpreting techniques along with a thorough knowledge of vocabulary, terminology, and basic information in a variety of subjects as well as the knowledge of special vocabulary and techniques used in interpreting professional and technical subject matters are required. The ability to interpret and transliterate at a skill level and to adapt these skills to communicate unique terminology and languages along with the ability to adapt interpreting and transliterating skills to an academic setting is required. The ability to interpret difficult and complex words, thoughts and feelings, learn unique subject matter, theories and terminology as well as the ability to be accurate, thorough, and comprehensive in providing services is required. The ability to serve a group as well as an individual, and the ability to deliver platform interpreting or deliver oral speeches is required. A wide acquaintance with the academic higher education system of instruction through attendance or graduation from a four-year college or university is desirable. Range B Salary: The possession of the Comprehensive Skills Certificate issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or equivalent by a recognized evaluating agency is required.
