Typical Activities

Under general supervision, the Interpreter/Transliterator will facilitate the integration of hearing-impaired persons into the regular classrooms or other instructional setting by using sign language or oral transmitting by interpreting the spoken or signed communication. The least difficult positions require translation of lectures or ordinary conversational vocabulary into oral transmitting, which can be understood by a lip reader. The most difficult positions may employ sign to voice interpretation to assist students to participate full in academic and student activities. Other difficult assignments may involve technical or specialized subject matter, concepts, theory and vocabulary as well as require special signs, serve several hearing-impaired persons, perform oral transmitting for lip readers or involve persons who speak very rapidly.

Minimum Qualifications

The qualified applicant will have any combination of experience and training in voice to sign or sign to voice interpreting or transliterating which demonstrates assurance of skills appropriate for the level of the assignment. Such combination of experience and training should be equivalent to those prescribed for certification by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Depending on the assignment, positions will vary in type and extent of knowledge and abilities required and typically include knowledge of American Sign Language or other sign system required by the student or assignment. The knowledge of the methods and techniques used in communicating with hearing-impaired persons and knowledge of the Code of Ethics prepared by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf is required. Some assignments may require knowledge of technical signs or knowledge of the courses to which assigned. The ability to hear spoken language communication, use American Sign Language or other sign system, interpret visible to spoken English at a rate appropriate to the assignment, and to vocally express for hearing-impaired signers is required. The ability to interpret or transliterate for a group of hearing-impaired persons is required.

Supplemental Information

Experience interpreting in a classroom setting, preferably post-secondary is desired.

Current employees will be given preferred consideration.

The successful candidate is required to complete a background check including fingerprinting, prior to assuming this position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
