The Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) is a key member of the Physician Practice and provides billing and coding expertise to ensure all patients receive high quality, efficient care.

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: · Provides preoperative patient assessment and teaching. · Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate corrective action. · Applies principles of asepsis and infection control skillfully. · Applies knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative relative to operative procedures wherein the RNFA assists. · Performs positioning, prepping and draping the patient. · Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulation bleeding pints, ligating vessels and by other means as directed by the surgeon. · Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques. · Handles tissue as directed by the surgeon. · Performs wound closure as directed by the surgeon; sutures the peritoneum, fascia, subcutaneous tissue and skin. · Assists with transferring the patient to and from the operating room. · Performs postoperative patient evaluation teaching. · Coordinates the OR schedule for the practice. · Responsible for orienting and mentoring new employees. · Demonstrates flexibility to work with all surgeons · Serves as a liaison between operating surgeons and OR for special needs for cases, i.e. equipment, new procedures, etc.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES This position requires the following minimal requirements: · Proficiency in perioperative nursing practice both as a scrub nurse and circulating nurse. · Demonstrated knowledge and skill in applying principles of asepsis and infection control. · Demonstrated knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique relative to operative procedures wherein the CRNFA assists. · Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate corrective action. · Demonstrated ability to function effectively and harmoniously as a team member and communicate well with patients, peers, physicians, and family members. · Able to perform effectively in stressful and emergency situations. · Demonstrated skill in behaviors that are unique to functioning as a first assistant. · Meets requirements, statutes, regulations and hospital policies relevant to RN First Assistants. · Knowledge of accepted nursing standards and practices. · Knowledge of pharmacology. · Knowledge of basic computer skills. · Skill in providing patient care in accordance with the facility’s applicable standards, policies, and procedures. · Ability to present a positive image of the facility and maintain patient confidentiality.

EDUCATION · Graduation from an approved school of nursing. · Completion of an RN First Assistant education program which consists of an RN First Assistant course and internship equivalent to one year of formal, academic, post basic nursing study, in which the curriculum addresses all the content areas of the modules of the Core Curriculum for the RN First Assistant and college credit is awarded along with a degree or certificate. The RNFA program is associated with a school of nursing at a university or college that is accredited for higher education by and accrediting agency that is nationally recognized by the Secretary of the U.S. 12 Department of Education. · Minimum of 3 -5 years diversified perioperative nursing experience; both scrubbing and circulating.


· Current licensure as a registered nurse in the state is required.

· Current CNOR (Certified Nurse in the OR).

· Completion of RN first assistant program.

· CRNFA or eligible.

· CPR certified.
