Role Purpose

The master patient index (MPI) is a critical business function and resource because it links a patient to demographics, clinical and financial information. The MPI must contain accurate, timely, and complete data that include a single identifier for each patient registered. The MPI data analyst is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and maintaining data integrity within the MPI(s) for the BJC system. This includes remediation of duplicate medical record numbers, overlays and assisting with correction of any clinical and demographic information. Using various research methodologies & the MPI application, evaluates the demographic indicators associated with each occasion of service. Protects and maintains the security and confidentiality of patient data and medical information. Ensures integrity of Master Patient Index and preserves the integrity of the Legal Health Record and adheres to all policies and procedures.


  • Works with Compliance, Risk Management and BJC Leadership on investigating Medical ID theft and HIPAA violations, resolving and performing any necessary systems corrections for misuse of patient information by an outside source or entity. Notifies the source and down streams of the overlay, so that information can be verified and corrected in their data base.

  • Identifies, investigates, expedites and performs any necessary systems corrections for overlays of patient information by multiple sources. Notifies the source and down streams of the overlay, so that information can be verified and corrected in the data base.

  • Performs and verifies the necessary systematic combines/merges of duplicate patients in the appropriate different systems (SMPI, EMPI, and aMPI) based on specific criteria outline in MPI Policy and Procedures. Verifies Patient Merge(s) to verify that correct patient matches have been completed correctly.

  • Identifies and performs any necessary systems corrections for patients when added to the MPI from various sources incorrectly. Changes include but not limited to name, alias, and date of birth, gender and social security number.

  • Resolves Service Now tickets, Share Point site requests, emails, phone calls, etc within the time frame allotted by each system. Requires effective communication with both BJC customers as well s those external to the BJC system.

Minimum Requirements


  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Associate's Degree
