The Department of Laboratories, Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH), is a full service laboratory, operating 24 hours a day. Laboratory Services are provided in Hematology, Immunology, Chemistry, Toxicology, Flow Cytometry, Cytology, Surgical Pathology, Microbiology, and Transfusion Medicine. Additionally, BJH operates a Histocompatibility Laboratory (HLA), blood donor/pheresis service, a molecular diagnostics laboratory, and bone marrow/stem cell preservation laboratory in support of the tertiary care mission of BJH and laboratory diagnostic needs of BJC HealthCare members and affiliates and other clients. The Laboratory oversees point of care testing hospital-wide. Laboratory analysis is performed on specimens of blood, urine, other body fluids, and tissue specimens submitted for testing on order of a physician or other health care provider approved to order laboratory testing.
Performs specimen processing and routine / complex testing on blood and other specimens which requires a knowledge and understanding of quality control, basic instrument maintenance, and procedure methodologies and reference ranges. Maintains appropriate documentation of all activities as required. Demonstrates good laboratory practice
Reports and maintains record of patient test results through the laboratory computer system accurately, meeting published turn around times for routine testing and stats.
Documents patient test management problems/concerns on quality documents and initiates corrective action.
Performs quality controls for all equipment and troubleshoots malfunctioning instrumentation as necessary. Monitors quality control performance and corrects any problems and or reports any problems to the appropriate department.
Operates all instrumentation in assigned areas to deliver precise, timely, and accurate laboratory results. Performs laboratory procedures for specimen collection, processing, test analysis.
Trains new personnel in methods, procedures and use of equipment and instruments specific to the assigned area.
