The Front End Business Group combines activities associated with the conversion and enrichment of uranium and with the design and fuel production for nuclear reactors. The production capacities of the Group, one of the world's leaders in the sector, are undergoing modernization.

Neutronics - Richland:

The Neutronics Richland department directly supports the reactor core design and analysis needs for BWR fuel customers. The department performs a full range of neutronics, fuel management, and safety analysis of the fuel and core design. BWR neutronics engineers are involved in developing nuclear fuel and core designs, establishing mechanical and fuel design safety limits, including evaluation of critical heat flux during normal operation and transient events, and developing neutronic and thermal-hydraulic code inputs and methods to support the fuel analyses and plant operations. The Neutronics Richland department works closely with other engineering departments (mechanical, thermal-hydraulic, materials), customers, and regulators. As part of the U.S. Fuel Business Unit, Neutroncis Richland interfaces with the fuel manufacturing plant, which is also located in Richland.

  • AREVA is seeking a BWR Neutronics Codes and Methods Engineer IV - Advisory Engr. for our Neutronics department in Richland, WA. *

Responsibilities and duties include:

  • Support development of neutronics computer codes and methods to be used by AREVA application engineers and external customers to perform reactor physics calculations. These reactor physics calculations are performed to demonstrate compliance with safety limits and to define cost effective fuel management plans.

  • Utilize knowledge of reactor physics, computer programming, and computer operating systems to provide technical expertise in the implementation and maintenance of reactor physics methodologies.

  • Critical evaluation of current methodologies and the development of replacement methodologies, including 3-D reactor simulators and spectral analysis codes and methods.

  • Prepare Licensing Topical Reports (LTRs) for developed neutronics methods, and interact with NRC and licensing authorities to obtain approval for use of the methods.

  • Work as part of a team that includes engineers from other Fuel Design engineering departments and Codes and Methods development engineers in the neutronics group to develop, improve, and maintain BWR neutronics Codes & Methods, including automation systems.

  • Maintenance of the current BWR reload methods, maintenance of engineering automation systems, and the development of state of the art next generation BWR reload analysis methods.

  • Reload design and analysis engineers work together with Codes and Methods development engineers to continue improvement and maintenance of methods and automation tools and to ensure successful delivery of fuel reload design and analysis products to BWR customers.

  • Work as an applications engineer performing reload design and analysis for the first few years in Neutronics Richland.

* * Engineer IV: * BS in Nuclear Engineering plus 5 - 7 years experience reactor physics or fuel management engineering experience. An advanced engineering degree may be substituted for related work experience (MS 1-2 yrs. or PhD 1-3 yrs.)

  • Principal Engineer: BS in Nuclear Engineering plus 7-10 years experience reactor physics or fuel management engineering experience. An advanced engineering degree may be substituted for related work experience (MS 1-2 yrs. or PhD 1-3 yrs.)

  • Advisory Engineer: BS in Nuclear Engineering plus 12 years experience reactor physics or fuel management engineering experience. An advanced engineering degree may be substituted for related work experience (MS 1-2 yrs. or PhD 1-3 yrs.)

  • Familiarity with computer systems, e.g., personal computers, HP workstations, UNIX, LINUX or other operating systems.

  • Proficient with C/C and FORTRAN computer languages.

  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must have a pro-active approach to problem identification and resolution.

  • Must have ability and attitude to learn a variety of new procedures, processes, and tools, while maintaining various stages of production.

  • Must be able to work well in a fast-paced team environment.

  • Proficiency with MS WORD and EXCEL.

  • Familiarity with fundamentals of light water reactor (LWR) neutronics/thermal hydraulics numerical methods.

The following requirements are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position.

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) is a plus but not a strict requirement.

  • Work experience in the areas of neutronics/physics and/or thermal hydraulics design of nuclear fuel assemblies and core reloads is preferred.

  • Experience with nuclear fuel neutronics analysis spectral/lattice codes (CASMO-3, CASMO-4, etc) and core simulator codes (SIMULATE, MICROBURN-B2, etc) is a plus.

  • French, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and/or German language skills are a plus.

  • Experience in Lean Six Sigma product/process development in design and engineering is a plus.

  • Basic experience and capabilities with MICROSOFT Office software products (WORD, EXCEL, etc.) are required.

  • Experience working with engineering workstation computers and LINUX and/or UNIX operating environments

  • Computer programming/software capabilities and experience in FORTRAN, C/C , SMALLTALK are a plus.

  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must have a pro-active approach to problem identification and resolution .

  • Must have ability and attitude to learn a variety of new procedures, processes, and tools, while maintaining various stages of production.

  • Must be able to work well in a fast-paced team environment. Supervision and leadership experience and training is a plus, especially at the Principal Engineer level .
