The Surgical Technician II is able to independently scrub complex surgical procedures (ie Robotics, Total Joints, and Spine). Possesses a working knowledge of powered instrumentation, video equipment, microscopes and complex instrumentation/equipment. The surgical tech II shall assist with the nursing care of the patient under the direct and indirect supervision of an OR Registered Nurse. The technician functions as a sterile scrub person caring for patients undergoing surgery within the OR suite. The technician may assist with duties of a circulating nurse under the immediate supervision of a circulating RN. Assists the Clinical Coordinator in support of their surgical services. Considers age-related factors in care, treatment, education and evaluation of patients ranging from neonates to geriatrics. Applies knowledge of age-related factors appropriately in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies and procedures.
Competent to co-circulator with an RN when needed.
Able to prep patient
Facilitates OR efficiency by proactive planning and adjusting to changing priorities.
Able to adjust to meet the needs of service surgeons.
Assists circulating nurse in setting up room ensuring presence and proper functioning of all necessary equipment and instruments.
Participates in sponge, needle and instrument counts, readies sutures and passes all instruments, equipment, sponges, medications, etc. to surgeons and assistants as needed and/or requested.
Passes specimen from surgeon to circulating nurse. Responsible for specimen while on field.
Performs related duties including but not limited to: assist in cleaning and stocking; picking cases for next day; housekeeping duties; and attending staff meetings. Directly involved in room turnover between cases.
Works as a collaborative member of the OR team.
Demonstrates ability to adjust to different situations at any given time.
Anticipate needs of surgical team on field.
Takes direction from circulating nurse.
Maintains aseptic technique and sterile field.
Performs assisting functions for surgeon, as directed, to include but not limited to: holding retractors, guiding laparoscopic camera and/ suctioning operative field.
Able to troubleshoot powered instrumentation, video equipment, microscopes and complex instrumentation/equipment.
Acts as a preceptor for new and experienced staff when asked.
Certification: Completion of Surgical Technician Course or equivalent required. Surgical Technician certification preferred. BLS required.
Experience: Must have a minimum of 1 year experience as surgical technician or scrubbing experience and/or SPD experience
Davinci experience strongly preferred
