This job posting is intended to build up an eligibility pool of individuals to fill a Medical Assistant position. Qualified applicants may be contacted at anytime until December 31, 2016 and be invited to interview for a open position should one become available.

Typical Activities

Under the general supervision of a Physician, Clinic Coordinator, and the Director of the Student Health Center, the incumbent will be responsible for performing a variety of medical technical support services within their scope of practice. Medical Assistants should have formal training which permits them to administer medication employing a variety of means, including injection, and perform numerous standard tests and limited procedures. The incumbent will take, monitor and record vital signs, describe pertinent symptoms; obtain brief medical history. Incumbent will obtain and order laboratory tests as directed by medical providers; make appropriate entries in EHR; prepare and assist patients for examination; administer immunizations and medications under guidelines of standardized procedures. The incumbent will perform vision and hearing screening. The incumbent will assist with special immunization clinics for a variety of student programs (Admissions, Nursing, IEP, Palm Desert); assist with health education projects for example pre-diabetic prevention education and screening. The incumbent assists with health education projects: for example pre-diabetic prevention education and screening. Incumbent will assist in the cleaning and stocking of work areas with appropriate supplies; assist in the sterilization and maintenance of instrument trays and/or surgical equipment; open and close patient care area. The incumbent will perform routine daily housekeeping and supply maintenance in clinical areas and perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess the equivalent to a high school diploma. A certificate of completion of specific types and hours of training to perform the duties outlined in the Medical Assistant scope of practice is required. Applicants must possess a working knowledge of daily clinic operations ranging from delivery of health care services to patient scheduling and reception, clinic administrative and clerical functions along with a working knowledge of aseptic techniques and requirements and a working knowledge of the uses, application, and proper operation of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing the duties assigned. Applicants must possess a basic knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology appropriate to the duties assigned along with an understanding of the potential hazards or complications resulting from administering medications and knowing how to initiate emergency procedures. Applicants must possess a working knowledge of California laws and regulations pertaining to medical assistants. Applicants must have the ability to utilize Universal Precautions with patient care. Applicants must have well developed oral and written communication skills. Applicants must have the ability to properly use techniques in administering medications in a variety of manners including by intramuscular, intradermal, or subcutaneous methods and by inhalation. Also, applicants must have the ability to properly use techniques in performing injections and phlebotomy. Applicants must have competency in performing assigned medical technical support services such as the standard tests and limited procedures described above. Applicants must have the ability to maintain accurate records and enter data and simple reports into EHR. Applicants must have the ability to maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.

NOTE: If a Medical Assistant is performing phlebotomy outside the regular scope of practice, appropriate phlebotomy certification may be required by the State of California.
