BASIC FUNCTION:* * * Support PCMC’s hallmarks of service excellence and quality for all job responsibilities * Under the general direction of the Registered Nurse and Nurse Manager is responsible for monitoring the assigned central station EKG monitors for the unit population. SIGNIFICANT RESPONSIBILITIES * Consistently deliver the best in customer service and patient care. As a team member, demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with patients, families, visitors and other employees * Champion PCMC’s mission, vision and values; comply with the policies and procedures, ethical standards and code of conduct set forth by the company * Prints rhythm strip immediately if rhythm changes or patient complains of chest pain or discomfort and notifies primary nurse. * Ensures placement of patient on EKG Monitor * Immediately reports any change in rhythm or other pertinent observations to the charge nurse or assigned nurse. * Works with assigned nursing personnel to coordinate initiation and/or discontinuation of cardiac monitoring. * Charts patients' vital signs and ensures notification of the charge nurse and/or assigned nurse of any significant changes. * Assesses quality of tracings to minimize artifact and other problems. * Maintains/checks arrhythmia detection as well as the high & low limit alarm settings for each monitored patient. * Ensures that the central monitoring station has adequate coverage at all times. * Facilitates proper utilization of EKG Monitoring. * Reports pertinent changes in patients' status to the Charge RN immediately of the noted change. * Reports all abnormal findings to the assigned nurse or charge RN immediately. * Answers call lights and patient need requests without delay. Ensures CNA/primary nurse acknowledges patient needs. * Identifies, sequesters and reports malfunctioning equipment to the Engineering Department immediately. (Includes Red Tagging item and listing on tag the problem experienced.) * Receives patient status report for area of responsibility from off-going staff members. * Completes initial review of patient status noting patient's condition/responses within the first hour of the shift. * Orients new personnel to the unit as delegated by the Charge RN/CCU Director. * Participates in the hospital's risk management program by reporting all untoward events to the risk manager at the time of the occurrence * Assists in Quality Assessment and Improvement Program activities by retrieving data when assigned through chart review and observation monthly.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Completed a formal Monitor Technician program either at a vocational school or hospital based program. Successful completion of didactic and clinical based EKG examinations. Score of 90% or better on EKG Computer Based Instruction or other testing parameter as designated by the department Nurse Manager. Additional training in Cardiac Rhythm interpretations and the ability to recognize and report abnormal Cardiac Rhythms
Experience: Secretarial experience in a hospital setting preferred.

Must have excellent organizational skills, oral and written skills, the ability to work independently and make decisions and take initiative when needed. Needs strong clerical and computer skills. Must possess the ability to follow directions and work well under stress and juggle priorities. Must be able to handle delicate matters with discretion and to communicate with all levels of employees, physicians, patients and families. General knowledge of Nursing Unit operation, excellent interpersonal skills, must be self-motivated, ability to set priorities, performs well in stress and emergency situations, ensures accuracy & completeness of work performed, follows established procedures performing job functions, demonstrates a thorough knowledge of Unit Coordinator work practices, follows through with assignments and informs Director if unable to complete task, adheres to established hospital and department guidelines & protocols, supports hospital mission, vision and values. The Monitor Technician requires knowledge of Medical Terminology and familiarity with medical technology as it relates to nursing. The ability to retrieve data from the hospital's information system is required along with the communicate information in a written and auditory fashion.
