Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting;Recent progressively responsible experience in financial accounting;Knowledge of professional standards, financial reporting, and accounting theory;Strong attention to detail, organizational skills and ability to prioritize competing projects;High level of problem solving ability;Ability to consistently meet deadlines;Strong oral and written communication skills;Supervisory experience;Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and management;Extensive experience with and proficiency in Excel;Demonstrated knowledge of automated accounting systems;Ability to extract and work with large data sets; and,Experience with the preparation of financial statements.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity withNACUBOfinancial accounting and reporting guidelines;Experience with anERPsystem (SAP, Banner, PeopleSoft);Experience with automated reporting tools (data warehouse);Experience with governmental and/or not-for-profit accounting;Experience in serving on committees and teams;Certified Public Accountant or a graduate degree in Accounting or a closely related field; and,Minimum of five (5) years of recent progressively responsible experience in financial accounting.

Job Description

Perform advanced, professional accounting functions directly related to the integrity of the university’s financial reporting; ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and other authoritative guidelines; support department planning and staff development; provide technical assistance to staff, supervising and coordinating deadline driven assignments; evaluate existing and propose needed written procedures to increase efficiency or reach compliance; review and prepare periodic financial statements, account reconciliations, journal entries, and various ad-hoc reports; perform advanced on-demand analysis supported by narratives supporting courses of action and conclusions.

Job Duties

Ensure accurate and timely reporting in accordance with professional standards, Federal, State, and university policies and procedures; provide supervision and guidance to others; conduct annual staff performance evaluations; review and verify the accuracy and appropriateness of journal entries, reconciliations, and a variety of other accounting reports and financial statements; support month-end and annual fiscal close by performing allocations and preparing journal entries and financial statements; prepare a variety of statutorily required reports; manage accounts receivable billings and advance process enhancements; prepare technical accounting position papers; account and report for the Texas State University Research Foundation; extract data, analyze financial transactions and reports; prepare spreadsheets and graphs to facilitate interpretation of data; conduct internal and external training; conduct or manage special studies or projects and develop or recommend accounting methods and procedures; develop and maintain written policies and procedures; identify changing requirements for management information needs; review account structure; interact with and provide information for internal and external auditors; develop complex, non-standard, financial reports and statements; perform other duties necessary for the effective operation of the department.

Some evening and weekend hours are necessary, with peak amounts of overtime during September and October for preparation of the annual financial report and fiscal year-end close-out.
