Title: Intern - User Experience (UX) Designer

Location: Corporate Office - Nashville, TN

Job Summary

This designer delivers on “Front End” (User Interface & User Experience – UI & UX) design commitments from start to finish for all aspects of the consumer facing products such as HCA websites, mobile apps, print collateral, and Consumer Patient Portal. Designer demonstrates capability to design, development, implement, and support visual design for UI, UX, Print & Graphic User Interface solutions. Designer can quickly learn and maintain existing solutions as well as new designs. Designer provides key problem resolutions for production systems as needed and has a developing understanding of design to help the HCA consumer facing products. Designer should have a developing knowledge and experience in mobile, web interface, Print, UX, GUI, world standards in web design and an ability to build designs that integrates with other systems and technologies. This designer is a highly motivated, creative, self-starter and is committed to delivering quality solutions within agreed upon timelines.


75% - Design Patient & Consumer Facing Product Visual UX/UI

  • Take workflow and direction from UXCD Manager, Account Managers & senior designers

  • Support and maintain the art assets of HCA web, portal & mobile properties

  • Work closely with peers to provide UI/UX

  • Develop art deliverables & utilize design pattern standards

  • Ability to create, desktop, mobile, adaptive & responsive designs for patient & consumer facing digital products on the web and mobile

  • Build UX wireframes & prototypes

  • Provide graphic design & maintenance for marketing and communication materials and intranet websites

  • Select colors and photography for websites

  • Maintain and create graphic design for posters, one pagers, brochures and other traditional media

  • Incorporate marketing and branding into layout, color theory and typography in digital media

  • Deliver digital working files and comps for developers and clients

  • Design and deliver projects on time and within the given budget

  • Effectively deliver on daily workflow and to-dos

  • Able work with a team and by themselves with great organization and communication skills

  • Assist in troubleshooting activities.

  • Developing knowledge of modern browsers such as Chrome, Safari, Firefox in mobile and desktop as well as Internet Explorer 10 .

25% - Design UI/UX Wireframes

  • Support design studio sessions

  • Implement written copy and marketing verbiage

  • Design and UX wireframes for website apps

  • Test UX wireframes

  • Measure and document user feedback


  • Current student in the last 6 months to a year of pursuing a bachelors degree or graduate student pursing masters degree

  • Graphic Design majors preferred

Experience (entry level in the following):

  • Developing understanding for design, form and layout for print and web

  • Developing understanding of HTML5 and CSS3 – JavaScript and jQuery is also a plus but not required

  • Design responsive web app, iOS, Droid and other emerging mobile applications

  • Developing typographic & typography design skills

  • Build UX wireframes & prototypes in InVision, UXPin, Axure, Balsamiq, or other related tool.

  • Developing Experience with adaptive & responsive web design techniques. Ideally this experience would include implementing one or more well-known responsive design frameworks such as Twitter Bootstrap, Foundation, Skeleton, etc.

  • Have a growing foundation designing native & non-native web apps on iOS (iPhone, iPad), Android and other appropriate mobile interfaces.

  • Fluency in current graphic design practices and web production software, such as Adobe Creative Cloud: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop,

  • Developing understanding of desktop, tablet & mobile responsive web in modern browsers such as Webkit, Opera & Mozilla based cross-browser/platform issues and code solutions

  • Develop software with a focus on delivering reusable design.


  • Ability to work 20-40 hours a week

  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Aftereffects

  • Experience with HTML, CSS or Sketch a plus

  • Strong illustration skills are a plus

  • Has a passion for engaging end users through highly interactive interface experiences.

  • Knowledge of solutions to emulate CSS3 and HTML5 experiences on Internet Explorer 7 browsers through progressive enhancement and/or JS solutions.

  • Curiosity, full of excitement, and an outside of the box thinker

  • A passion for learning new technologies / techniques

  • Work on assignments involving the use of various technologies both old and new

  • Work as part of a team and work independently.

  • Provide after-hours/on-call support as needed

  • Overtime may be required to meet deadlines
