The Speech Pathologist functions as a member of the healthcare team. The purpose is to provide medically prescribed speech therapy programs in the hospital in accordance with national standards and administrative policies of the hospital. The goal is to enable patients with speech and language disorders, whether it is receptive or expressive, to communicate as effectively and clearly as possible, and to assist the physician with determining appropriate dietary feeding levels for patients with dysphagia and progress the level through the use of therapeutic techniques as appropriate.
Position Requirements:*A. **Licensure/Certification/Registration* a. Must obtain and retain state licensure b. A Certificate of Clinical Competence in speech pathology is required or CFY c. BLS – Healthcare provider * * *B. **Education:* Must hold a M.S. or a M.A. in Speech Pathology.** * * *C. **Experience:* Experience in a hospital-based department is desirable, but not required.** a. Must perform in accordance with delineated job responsibilities and satisfactorily complete a yearly evaluation based on these responsibilities. b. Must possess the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively meet the needs of the patient/internal and external customers. c. Experience in a hospital setting is preferred. * * *D. Special qualifications:*Knowledge of the normal development of speech, language and hearing. Ability to perform * *diagnostic tests for communication disorders and formulate a treatment plan. Must be able to interact in a patient, encouraging manner with clients to understand their communication or swallow needs and assist them in achieving the program goals specific to them. Good interpersonal skills with customer, co-workers and clients. Must be able to display patience when client’s frustration level is high.
II. Degree of Supervision Required:* General guidance from management, expected to perform most duties independently and in accordance with established policy and procedure. *IV. Physical Requirements:Physical requirements include ability to bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist; bend legs at knee to come to rest on knee or knees; bend the body downward and forward by standing for sustained periods of time; moving about on foot to accomplish tasks; use upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward; use upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion; raise object from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position; pick, pinch, type or otherwise work with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm; applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm; perceive attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
