WHO MAY BE CONSIDERED: Open to all qualified U.S. citizens. You do not have to be a current or former government employee to be considered for this position.

This is a Term position. Initial appointment is 13 months with possible extensions up to 4 years.

This position is located in the Maintenance Division at Mesa Verde National Park. The primary purpose of this position is to provide preservation work on Modified Pueblo Revival buildings. The position also requires maintenance work on non-historical buildings as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The incumbent performs work at construction sites. There is considerable physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of various sizes, weights, and shapes. There is considerable standing, stooping, lifting, and bending. Because of the multi-faceted craft aspects of this position, work is frequently performed under structures, which requires the incumbent to work overhead or in a stretched, cramped, or awkward position. Fieldwork magnifies the physical effort required to perform the duties of this position and reflect actual restoration project environments. Incumbent is required to perform craftsman work in the investigation of historic structures and in working with other employees in restoration techniques. Inspections may require working in cramped, close quarters underneath structures or on rooftops several hundred feet above ground level. The incumbent occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds or more . Backcountry work may require the incumbent to hike or ride by horseback to the job site in remote locations over rough terrain.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed throughout the Park , where the incumbent is subject to cuts from hand or power tools and danger from flying splinters or chips. In the shop the incumbent is exposed to noise and sawdust in the air. The presence of lead paint on historic fabric may require special knowledge and handling and the use of protective equipment in the shop or at the job site , and require special attention and the use of safety equipment. Work is both inside and outside , in all types of weather. The incumbent must work at elevations from sea level to above 4,000 feet. Temperatures vary from -20 to 90+ degrees . Winter snow depths may vary from two to six feet with icy driving conditions involved. The incumbent may be exposed to snow and ice conditions in winter and rain and wind in summer. Must have and maintain a valid state driver's license. Work is performed in all types of weather, both indoors and outdoors. Considering the nature of historic structures and the unknown structural characteristics , field inspections may contain some hazardous conditions (e.g ., asbestos, PCBs).

AREA INFORMATION: Mesa Verde is the premier archaeological park in the United States and a World Heritage Site. Today, the park protects over 4,000 known archaeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. The park has over 52,000 acres, 8,100 of which have been designated as wilderness. Mesa Verde is located in Southwest Colorado near several towns including Cortez (10 miles from the entrance), Mancos (8 miles) and Durango (36 miles). All services including a hospital, K-12 schools, grocery, recreation centers and more are present. The area is a hotbed for recreational enthusiasts. No matter which direction you travel from the park, recreational opportunities exist including hiking, rafting/kayaking, biking and so much more. The area is diverse ranging from high mountain wilderness to desert, all within a short drive. AT MESA VERDE THERE IS A RISK OF EXPOSURE TO WILDLIFE PATHOGENS TRANSMISSIBLE TO HUMANS, SUCH AS HANTAVIRUS AND PLAGUE . While this risk is remote, some of the work sites may be infested with infected rodents and some work assignments may require the handling of live or dead animals; therefore, the possibility exists. NOTE TO ALLERGY SUFFERERS : Mesa Verde contains a variety of both native and exotic species of grasses, trees, and plants (i.e. sagebrush, pinion, juniper, Canada thistle, etc.) and other known allergens.
