Volunteers of America of Greater Los Angeles is a large, national not-for-profit organization founded in 1896. We provide a variety of social services to Los Angeles area communities such as Head Start programs, Upward Bound college prep programs, veterans’ services, homeless shelters, low-income housing program as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Upward Bound is one of seven federally-funded TRiO programs. The Upward Bound program was established to provided fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income familiies and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal is to increate the rate at which participants complete the secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education.


Provide individual and small group tutoring and homework assistance to students in the classroom. Assist students in improving academic achievement through homework help and/or class material review. Other assistance might include: discussing the text, predicting test questions, formulating ideas for papers. The tutor will also provide advisement that could improve grade.


• Assists students in achieving a better understanding of a specific subject material and in improving academic capabilities • Support/Supervise in the completion and review of daily homework • Assists / supervises the completion and review of homework • Meets with teachers to assist the student in passing the course, when needed • Offers strategies to students on study skills, test taking and note-taking • Maintain students order and discipline by managing students' behavior and reinforce rules of the program • Monitor the use of tutoring resources (laptops, calculators, books, etc.) during tutoring session • Assures that all students sign in when coming in the "Skills Mastery Sessions" • Communicate with Lead Tutor, Educational Adviser and Assistant Director concerning the participants' • Promote and stimulate session participation


• Must be a rising junior, senior or graduate student currently enrolled in college and in good standing • Good Interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to youth from varying educational, cultural and social backgrounds • Experience working with high school students • Knowledge of youth development

Special Skills:

• Basic to intermediate knowledge in trigonometry or calculus and have mastery of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and basic mathematical concepts • Knowledge of physical and biological science • Familiarity with English
