Job Summary:

Responsible for the overall soundness of the Residential Lending and Retail Banking credit portfolios within the Regional Banking Group. Develop and maintain controls and processes for credit approval, portfolio surveillance, and credit risk management and administration. These duties include development and oversight of credit policies, processes and procedures and the risk control framework that support consumer lending credit risk appetite standards. Reports to the Chief Risk Officer.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide loan portfolio oversight to ensure Residential Lending and Retail Banking asset quality and performance trends are maintained at desired levels. Lead portfolio surveillance and risk identification activities including developing early de-risking strategies.

  • Develop and maintain a clear risk appetite for the Residential Lending and Retail Banking Business Units and ensure they are monitored and updated as appropriate.

  • Support and maintain the bank’s credit culture and foster a risk-awareness environment where all Business Unit members have an understanding of what is and what is not acceptable.

  • Establish and maintain credit policies, underwriting standards, procedures, risk limits, approval authorities, controls and processes to ensure compliance.

  • Develop, review and submit for annual review all policies, plans and procedures for loan and credit-related products.

  • Work closely with Business Unit management to understand short- and long-term plans and strategies and ensure alignment with defined credit risk appetite(s).

  • Serve as chair of Business Unit risk sub-committees.

  • Monitor key competitor actions to ensure that the Bank is well positioned to take advantage of changes and opportunities within its markets and with its business segments.

  • Ensure appropriate diversification of the credit portfolios; encourage appropriate risk expansion including new markets and products that meet bank lending standards and financial returns.

  • Participate in enterprise-wide risk management initiatives as appropriate including the ACL process and DFAST and CCAR stress testing activities.

  • Oversee real estate collateral valuation processes for the Residential Lending Business Unit. Ensure compliance with bank standards and state and federal regulations.

  • Oversee development and maintenance of quantitative models and tools to detect and/or manage risk in covered portfolios. Ensure compliance with bank and regulatory model management policies and practices.

  • Ensure problem loans are identified in a timely manner and are structured and managed to reduce risk and that credit grades are accurate.

  • Coordinate with Business Unit management to ensure that credit-related issues identified from internal audits and regulatory examiners are adequately addressed within the agreed timeframe.

  • Maintain a current knowledge of the legislative and regulatory environment to recognize potential risks that might negatively impact the bank’s reputation.

  • Actively participate in the America’s Risk Committee and Board of Directors’ Risk Committee to advise on credit risk-taking activities including underwriting trends, asset quality and portfolio performance.

  • Maintain an understanding with risk measurement methodologies including economic capital and the Basel regulatory framework.

  • Residential mortgage and consumer credit risks, products and operations.

  • Base understanding of advanced quantitative tools and techniques such as credit scoring, financial forecasting, modeling and the use of risk analytical techniques used in portfolio management.

  • Typically requires a minimum of 15 years of credit experience, which should include significant lending and/or credit experience in all areas of consumer lending.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing a risk management department or group, especially in the areas of consumer loan portfolios is preferred.

  • Thorough knowledge of consumer lending, as well as a proficiency in the use of advanced quantitative tools and techniques such as credit scoring, financial forecasting, modeling and the use of risk analytic techniques used in portfolio management and off-balance sheet asset securitization.

  • Proven executive level skills including significant responsibility in a senior management role as well as experience in a credit administration oversight role.

  • Effective interpersonal style with the ability to effectively interface with clients, other employees, senior management and regulators.

  • Ability to communicate in an open, candid, clear and consistent manner.

  • Listens effectively and probes for new ideas and solutions.

  • Ability to attract, build and retain a strong team.
