POSITION DESCRIPTION:The Creative Marketing Manager is responsible for the University’s brand management and creative messaging strategy. The manager oversees the creative direction and messaging strategy that promotes the University mission, vision, and core values and articulation of the brand strategy. This role is responsible to be a forward thinker and find innovative ways to further the University brand and forecasts future trends. The incumbent will serve as a leader in the marketing department and within the University. This is a supervisory position and located on site in Lenexa, KS.


  • Ensure a consistent, branded University image throughout all promotional materials and University initiatives

  • Develop positioning recommendations, guide market research analysis and define brand elements, voice and tone

  • Track latest trends in design, advertising & marketing to enhance University brand

  • Lead the creative marketing process and provide creative direction to staff

  • Develop creative briefs, guidelines, and strategies for marketing and advertising campaigns

  • Lead creative projects and oversee their completion

  • Lead, develop and further enhance the University brand strategy and articulation of same

  • Ensure quality of solutions in terms of both creative quality and strategic relevance

  • Develop and maintain enhancement schedule/calendar for University and corporate Web sites consistent with current University image and brand strategy

  • Work closely with other departments and University operations to educate and communicate brand strategy, standards and articulation of differentiation in the higher education marketplace

  • Help conduct quantitative and qualitative studies and implement suggestions to enhance marketing initiatives

  • Manage the production and development of marketing and promotional collateral, direct mail and e-mail marketing campaigns, advertising and interactive media campaigns

  • Track results against goals, evaluate effectiveness of various strategies, and use results to improve or change strategies as necessary

  • Recruit, train, manage and retain creative staff, including goal setting, evaluating performance, providing actionable feedback, developing plans for improvement, and encouraging and fostering a team atmosphere

  • Plan, conduct, and evaluate research that will provide insight and creative direction to support marketing plans, new programs introductions, new market segments, brand strategy, etc.

  • Serve on cross-functional teams as necessary

  • Communicate business and technical needs to appropriate departments and vendors for assigned projects

  • Manage approved external vendors and agencies to meet established goals maintain relationships

  • Prepare price comparison analysis for all projects

  • Understand and follow purchase order and invoice processing procedures

  • Obtain necessary approvals, ensuring all finished projects meet business standards

  • Manage and coordinate special events

  • Manage and track departmental expenditures against established budget

  • Perform other tasks assigned


  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, marketing, advertising, communications, graphic or fine arts or related field is required.

  • 5-7 years of increasingly responsible creative marketing or brand management experience, preferably in education or for a consumer product or service with multiple markets/locations, and preferably for a high-consideration product or service

  • Able to direct and motivate team members to help them use their creative talents effectively

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with graphic design, and brand management required.

  • Ability to think “outside the box” and a drive for excellence to pursue brand recognition and awareness in an increasingly competitive environment

  • Ability to invent new ideas for branding, advertising campaigns and marketing messages.

  • Excellent working knowledge of software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign is required.

  • Analytical abilities are essential

  • High level of integrity, sensitivity to confidential information, and discretion required

  • Proven ability to create and lead a department of multiple staff members with varying responsibilities, to identify and hire excellent performers, to counsel and develop staff to take on increasing responsibilities

  • Able to manage multiple projects to timely and accurate completion

  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively in written documents and oral presentations

  • Knowledge of graphic communications technologies in prepress, printing and direct mail production preferred

  • Vendor management experience, including experience negotiating for best price, timely delivery and top quality work

  • Able to work in a positive team-oriented manner with a variety of people (students, faculty, staff, administrators, vendors, and members of the general public)

  • Language Skills: Able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Able to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Able to effectively present information to executive management, faculty, staff, and/or students.

  • Mathematical Skill: Able to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Able to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

  • Reasoning Ability:Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to present facts to faculty for departmental response. Able to deal with a variety of information presented in oral or written formats. Able to deal with non-verbal behavior in assisting with problem resolution.
