POSITION SUMMARY: The Registered Nurse performs direct patient care within the scope of the Registered Nurse Practice Act. Utilizes therapeutic communication in daily practice. Participates in performance improvement activities to assure continuous quality improvement. Cares for Neonate/Infant (0-12 months) Pediatrics (1 – 17 years) Adults (18 – 79 years) Elderly (80 years). Demonstrates a basic knowledge of physical assessment skills. Follows patient safety standards. Demonstrates a basic knowledge of EMTALA regulations. Utilizes translation services when indicated. Initiates emergent care following established protocols. Demonstrates knowledge regarding administration of medications requiring calculation of doses and rates and close monitoring (i.e. Dopamine, Retavase, Integrellin, Heparin, etc.) Demonstrates the ability to multi-task and act quickly. Demonstrates the ability to perform venipuncture for IV access and phlebotomy. The tasks and responsibilities include: * Assesses, plans and evaluates patient care needs. * Prioritizes patient care based on acuity level and available resources. * Carries out physician orders. * Assists physician during examination, treatment and procedures. * Administers prescribed medications, changes dressings, cleans wounds, and monitors vital signs. * Serves as the primary coordinator of all disciplines for coordinated patient care. * Monitors, records and communicates patient condition as appropriate utilizing computerized documentation systems. * Instructs and educates patients and families. * Assesses and coordinates patient's discharge planning needs with members of the healthcare team. * Provides age and culturally appropriate care. * Orients and mentors new staff members. * Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
Registered nurses accepting the assignment of triage must have the ability to rapidly risk stratify patient conditions and prioritize those patients that need immediate intervention. Registered Nurses assigned triage are to have a minimum of one year of emergency department experience, completed triage training requirements initially and annually and demonstrate the ability to:
· Collect pertinent subjective/objective data while providing physical, emotional, and psychosocial support to the patient and caregiver
· Interpret data with consideration for the age-appropriate physical, developmental, and psychosocial needs of the patient
· Use a valid and reliable triage system to assign triage acuity
· Implement appropriate interventions according to organizational policy
· Document relevant data and triage acuity
· Communicate significant findings to appropriate team members
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: * Current licensure with the Texas State Board of Nursing * Current certification as a BLS Healthcare Provider. * ACLS Certification required within 6 months in department (New Graduates within 12 months of hire) * PALS Certification required within 6 months in department (New Graduates within 12 months of hire) * TNCC preferred * Basic Computer Skills * Customer service abilities including effective listening skills. * Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment. New employees have up to 6 months from date of hire to obtain ACLS & PALS Employees transferring from a position that did not require ACLS & PALS have up to 6 months from date of transfer to obtain ACLS & PALS. New RN graduates have up to 12 months from date of hire or transfer to RNA/RN position to obtain ACLS &PALS.
