Who we’re looking for

Toyota’s Supplier Engineering Development (SED) Department is looking for a passionate and highly-motivated Principal Engineer.

The primary responsibility of this role is to support Toyota Supplier manufacturing process primarily during new model launch and through mass production, in order to achieve and sustain quality improvements, cost reductions, and on time part delivery without sacrificing safety.

The person in this role will support the SED department's objective to manage and lead supplier development to achieve world-class levels of supplier performance.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Utilize process engineering and Toyota Production System (TPS) skills through collaborative work with suppliers’ teams to ensure design and implementation of optimal manufacturing processes and shop-floor management systems.

  • High risk commodity engineering of critical outsourced Engine, Transmission and Chassis parts such as: Camshafts, Alternators, Clutches, Gears, Driveshafts, Shocks/Struts, Electric and Hydraulic Power Steering

  • Develop and execute supplier improvement strategies for under-performing or strategically important Toyota suppliers, in areas of Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost

  • Utilize TPS principles, Toyota Way best practices, structured problem-solving methods, and Operations skills to create the desired culture and capability within targeted suppliers.

  • Support new model launch projects with targeted suppliers to develop robust shop-floor and operations systems prior to start of production

  • Utilize collaborative development approach with suppliers, participating hands-on with supplier team members in improvement activities to foster coaching and teaching of the Toyota Way.

  • Plan & execute mass-production capacity countermeasures due to production plan changes or production increases.

  • Join new supplier evaluations and accurately identify supplier operational problem areas.

  • Lead supply-continuity crisis situations, driving proper actions and technical support by supplier and Toyota team members to ensure no interruption to Toyota production

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or similar Technical Field OR 10 years of equivalent professional experience in Forging, Casting or Machining

  • Manufacturing experience in the area of Production/Process Engineering or similar technical role

  • Experience with process planning and manufacturing support in the areas of Forging, Casting and/or Machining.

  • Project leadership for new model preparation activities

  • Experience interacting and building relationships with all levels of suppliers and supplier management

  • Strong knowledge of Toyota Production System fundamentals, with demonstrated examples of manufacturing performance improvement through application of Toyota Production System tools and skills

  • Ability and willingness to travel an average of 60% or 3 days / week

Added bonus if you have:

  • Automotive manufacturing experience at an OEM or supplier

  • Hands on manufacturing experience for Powertrain and/or Chassis

  • Experience with electrical commodities and assemblies

  • Experience with Plastics and/or Rubber commodities

  • Knowledge of Six-Sigma, APQP, and ISO tools

  • Toyota business experience
