Toyota’s Vehicle Regulation and Certification Engineering department is looking for a highly motivated and qualified Certification Engineer. The position serves as a key Toyota Certification Engineer and Representative to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and to a lesser degree, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. (NHTSA) The Certification Engineer will regularly contact agency staff, fielding inquiries & requests, and submitting all necessary documentation for Toyota to achieve Certificates of Conformity and other required documents to enable production and sale of Toyota and Lexus vehicles each year.

In this role, the Certification Engineer will interface with Toyota's Certification Department extensively, and with our R&D’s PCTE Dept. in its certification testing activity. The Certification Engineer may also represent Toyota in various industry groups, especially including the Alliance Certification W/G and other related Task Forces, and will also be instrumental in conducting transactional audits of other cert-related tests, documents and reports.


Actively work with Certification team Supervisor and other Team Members to obtain approval from EPA & CARB of our compliance to emissions & fuel economy regulations. Work closely with our Certification Groups to plan, schedule and track these approvals, complete and submit all needed documents, and report results across the enterprise. Strongly participate in several Report submissions for Toyota’s GHG / CAFE / Emissions performance for current and future model years to EPA & NHTSA Participate in Certification Audit process – regular review, check and audit of cert reports, documents, submissions, test results. Utilizing certification knowledge and skills, resolve a wide variety of problems of related stakeholder groups, mostly related to cert planning, audit and submission & reporting matters. Contribute to regular certification team reports. Support the maintenance and growth of a strong, professional relationship of trust and credibility with key agency contacts. A successful candidate will have:

A Bachelor’s Degree in a related Engineering or Science field. Working experience in the automotive / powertrain industry, ideally including the areas of emissions and fuel economy certification. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Good working knowledge of MS Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, IE, Lync), MS Project and database management. Experience and strong skills in managing simultaneous technical projects. Openness to learn and then teach Toyota culture and daily practices, including Toyota’s style of negotiation and certification. Interest and/or experience in working in a multi-cultural work environment. Can work overtime 15%-20% depending on project schedule. Can travel 5 to 10% depending on needed meetings with CARB / NHTSA Includes domestic & annual international travel. A successful candidate may have:

Automotive CFR based regulatory experience. Existing knowledge of related EPA, CARB & NHTSA regulations and standards. Experience in conducting emissions and fuel economy certification discussions and negotiations. Existing knowledge of EPA’s VERIFY (and CARB’s EDMS) submissions systems. Existing knowledge in and experience with conducting transactional auditing activities, preferably of technical activities and documents. Good strategic and negotiation skills. Experience in leading a project team to meet common objectives in a timely and efficient way. Some Japanese language capability.
