NPL Construction Construction Operations Quality Field Evaluator-Cortland & Chicago, IL in Cortland & Chicago, Illinois

Job Summary: Evaluates the knowledge, skills, and abilities of employees doing covered task gas work in order to ensure a qualified work force. Ensures that safety measures are in place at the worksite and surrounding areas. This opportunity presents a strong career move, given the visibility of safety at NPL Construction Co. The successful candidate must be disciplined and well-organized with a strong bias toward timely, detailed performance against aggressive deadlines, as well as a self-starting multi-tasker who can accomplish all assignments without need of close supervision. Relevant education may be a substitute for prior experience, as determined by V.P. & Chief Safety & Quality Officer.


  • Train employees on the required OQ material that meet all customer and federal requirements

  • Conduct field Operator Qualification (OQ) evaluations to ensure employees are properly qualified and meet all customer and federal requirements

  • Maintaining and tracking evaluations of employees who require OQs

  • Enhance, review and update OQ evaluation tools and resources to ensure best practice

  • Enforce Company Safety & Quality Policies and Customer Construction Standards

  • Inspect Safety and Quality of Crews

  • Complete Internal Quality Control Audits

  • Ensures all tools, materials, and props, evaluation site and setup are ready for the Evaluation process.

  • Ensures all safety measures are in place at the site and surrounding areas.

  • Ensures all documents are ready in advance of the evaluation process.

  • Develops props that can be utilized to simulate the actual work required by the covered task.

  • Conducts consistent evaluations by utilizing the consortium material such as the “Performance Evaluation” documents.

  • Evaluates the process including performance and knowledge based evaluation of each covered task for each employee requiring OQ.

  • Ensures any failures area explained to the employees and the associated Supervisor, including the fact that they are not qualified to perform the task which was failed. Both parties are also informed of the need for re-training and re-qualification.

  • Updates the Operator Qualification database with the results of each covered task evaluation.

  • Utilizes the OQ database to project, coordinate and schedule employee evaluations throughout the year.

  • Meet with Management to evaluate growth needs and ensure that they are aware of the OQ scheduling plans.

  • Other duties as required


  • Minimum 4 years underground gas utility experience and accompanying knowledge of natural gas construction, trenching and PPE.

  • Knowledge and understanding of NPL Quality Standards, Customer Construction Standards and the correct implementation of those standards.

  • Knowledge of OSHA and DOT regulations.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, English/Spanish bilingual a plus.

  • Must be able to represent NPL in a professional manner, reflecting the NPL Core Values and Leadership Principles.

  • Ability to plan and schedule activities over the course of several months, including OQ testing and evaluations

  • Ability to manage direct reports in person and remotely
