Direct Support Professional FLOATER for Residential Programs

What you’ll do in this job:

As a Direct Support Professional Floater you will have the opportunity to see the world (Columbia County at least) and meet many wonderful people (especially those in charge of recruiting). Your day might be spent in Hudson, Germantown, Copake, Taghkanic, Valatie, Chatham, or Ghent. Don’t panic; your work location with be pre-determined 2 weeks in advance (although it could change last minute due to the sky falling or unforeseen coverage needs). Although you might work with many managers, you will only report to one (we didn’t want to confuse you).

As part of your role you will:

  • Support the emotional, physical and personal well-being of the people you are working with.

  • Encourage growth by recognizing their autonomy

  • Partner with each individual and with their “Circle of Support” members

  • Affirm the human rights, civil rights and responsibilities of each individual as well as justice, inclusion and full community participation.

  • Perform in a manner that is consistent with the NADSP Code of Ethics

  • Work in a professional and ethical manner establishing a trusting relationship with the individuals and the employees at the site.

  • Support healthy living practices including diet, exercise, stress reduction and emotional support, medical and dental practices.

  • Follow all training, safety and reporting procedures.

  • Assist the individuals in maintain a comfortable and orderly home by teaching them within the scope of their abilities home cleaning activities, care for clothing and minor repairs.

  • Support individual’s independence in utilizing personal funds. Accept responsibility for all individuals’ funds, financial benefits and petty cash during shift.

  • Maintain all records and ensure completion of all required documentation.

  • As needed, provide medication support to each individual at the site.

  • Participate in the development and review for each individuals serve plan and that each person is successfully supported towards meeting their stated outcomes and goals.

  • Safely operate and maintain agency vehicles.

You will also get to go many places and do many things: movies, restaurants, shopping, bowling concerts, fairs or just a nice leisurely drive and then stopping for an ice cream cone.


Let’s start with the “must have’s” (aka: required):

  • High School Diploma or GED (now called TASC)

  • A valid driver’s license.

  • Ability to be certified in all required trainings

  • A very flexible attitude

  • Occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds

  • An amazing attitude and work ethic

  • Now what we would “like to have” (aka: preferred):

  • Two year degree in Human Services

  • Exceptional written, communication, and computer skills

  • A fun and creative approach to everything; from shopping to outings

  • Ability to make sound judgment calls

  • A witty sense of humor AND a good sense of direction (we will accept the ability to use a map or GPS for this)
