Boone Hospital Center is a 394-bed full service hospital located in Columbia, MO. It is a regional referral center located in the center of the state. The hospital provides progressive healthcare programs, services, and technology to people in 26 mid-Missouri counties. The pharmacy provides sterile intravenous medications that have been compounded in a controlled environment. All products are dispensed with consistent labeling, stability, sterility and quality control. This service also provides accurate and timely drug information to staff, physicians, and patients/families. This service is responsible for monitoring medication inventory for expiration and cost-effective utilization.

Role Purpose

Provides customer focused pharmaceutical care and ensure the prompt and accurate dispensing, processing, and recording of prescriptions according to prescription orders. Direct and assist in the procurement, storage, distribution and disposal of medications. Collaborate with health care providers to assess, monitor, initiate and modify medication use according to patient condition and age specific criteria. Prevent, direct and resolve medication-related issues. Counsel and educate to promote optimal drug therapy. Supervise and direct supportive staff.


  • Verifies prescribed medications and dosages to ensure that therapy is safe and effective for the patient's condition. Reviews patient profiles to identify clinically significant side effects, drug allergies, and drug interactions. Processes and labels prescriptions with accurate data and directions for patient use.

  • Provides consultation to patients regarding side effects, drug interactions, specific storage requirement and directions for use.

  • Maintain proficiency in operating pharmacy workflow management systems for point of sale, prescription order entry, patient profile review or retrieval of clinical data. Preserve proper records relating to medication profiles, prescription files, controlled substances records, and other legal and departmental record and procedures.

  • Accepts new prescription orders and collaborates with other health care providers to manage patient's drug therapy for effectiveness.

  • Assists in all daily operations in a manner that facilitates the achievement of a high level of customer satisfaction and experience.

  • Directs and manages workflow including oversight of technicians, interns and volunteers ensuring the accuracy of their work in accordance with departmental procedures and Federal and State regulations.

  • Participates in departmental meetings and on committees at the health service organization, as appropriate.

  • Serves as medication therapy resource for activities such as drug information, training of staff, transitions of care and Medication Therapy Services.

  • Evaluates medication orders for appropriateness with regard to patient condition, organ function and concomitant therapies to promote optimal patient outcomes. Documents all activities and communication as appropriate.

  • Recognize opportunities and offer solutions to maximize efficiency and promote safety within the medication use process.
