Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary SENIOR SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR in Boston, Massachusetts


The primary role of the Senior Systems Administrator is to be the Subject Matter Expert for all core infrastructure components focused on network and security. This would be complimented with supporting knowledge and experience with operating systems, enterprise grade storage and virtualization. This is a senior level technical position within the infrastructure organization and provides systems administration proficiency across all areas within the SME’s domain.


  • Implements enhancements, updates, upgrades and patches to ensure equipment is preventively maintained, running properly and protected from security threats. Ensures users are kept informed of changes on a timely basis. Executes and assists in the development of test plans to ensure updates are fully tested before going live. Performs spot checks in key areas/scenarios to ensure systems are up-to date as well as to minimize risk to ongoing operations.

  • Monitors and reports on processes, uptime, performance, utilization and capacity of systems and technologies. Collects and analyzes key performance metrics in order to recommend improvements in those systems and technologies or their associated process.

  • Executes and monitors equipment backups to ensure data and applications are safeguarded and can be restored to establish normal operation after an incident or disaster.

  • Troubleshoots the escalated issues within and outside of the SME’s domain. Provides or obtains their timely resolution. Analyzes failures, identifies root cause and implements and documents short and long-term corrective actions.

  • Monitors infrastructure related licensing and maintenance and support contracts, including coordinating support from 3rd party service providers.

  • Maintains technical documentation related to networking and infrastructure and updates as appropriate. In areas of expertise, provides training and direction to IT staff so that they may effectively perform their daily activities related to IT infrastructure.

  • Adheres to company polices, regulations and industry standards on compliance, information security and confidentiality. Provides recommendations on products or processes within IT security to adhere to or improve compliance to current or future company policies, regulations or industry standards.

  • A minimum of eight years of relevant experience.

  • BS/BA in computer science, information technology or related field.

  • Proficiency in initiating and applying project management tools and methodologies.

  • Superior listening as well as written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to plan and organize self as well as others.

  • Must be able to work creatively, calmly, flexibly and under tight deadlines in order to respond quickly and positively to shifting/multiple demands and opportunities.

  • In depth, up to date technical knowledge and hands on experience in most or all of the following areas: Microsoft Windows Server, Exchange 2010, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and Cisco Switching, Routing, Wireless and Security, NAC, EMC Storage, Systems Virtualization (VMWare, Hyper-V) and Desktop/Application Virtualization (XenApp, XenDesktop, App-V).

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and creative problem solving techniques in a highly complex environment using leading-edge technology and or/integrating diverse technology applications.
