Schepens Eye Research Institute, Mass Eye and Ear, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, has an opening for a full-time Post-Doctoral Fellow to work with Prof. Eli Peli and colleagues in the Harvard Medical School’s Mobility Enhancement and Vision Rehabilitation Center of Excellence.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly-motivated person with above-average computer programming skills (in particular, real-time GPU processing) who would enjoy the challenge of working with virtual reality systems (Oculus Rift head-mounted display) and Lytro Illum light-field camera in studies developing and evaluating the benefits of state of the art electro-optical imaging system for visual prostheses on object recognition and visual search. Major responsibilities will be: developing real-time image rendering software with head tracking feature for Oculus Rift and image processing software (edge filtering and compression) for captured light-field images from Lytro Illum and Raytrix light-field camera. Developed software will be tested by simulating the vision with retinal implant as well as with blind subjects using existing visual prostheses. The position provides an opportunity to learn vision science and cognitive science and their application to vision rehabilitation for blind people.

Requirements PhD in an area related to computer science or electrical engineering is required. Good problem solving skills, the ability to work independently and with a multidisciplinary team on multiple tasks are essential. A strong background in computer programming (real-time image processing and CUDA GPU coding) is mandatory and an interest in vision science would be advantageous.
