Job Summary

The RN works with his/her team partner(s), using the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate direct patient care. The RN serves as a clinical expert and assumes a leadership role on the Patient Care Team. As leader of the team, the RN is responsible for integrating care delivery among team members and directing the team toward the common goal of improved patient outcomes and customer experience.

The RN performs a variety of basic age-specific duties in providing comprehensive patient care. All clinical care is done under the direction of the RN who determines appropriate tasks for delegation. Members of the Patient Care Team are responsible for making observations as directed by the RN and reporting deviations to the RN.

Qualifications - Minimum


Graduate from accredited School of Nursing.

Current RN license in State of Ohio.

Effective October 1, 2011, must possess BSN or obtain within 5 years of employment.


Entry position.

Orientation program is provided.

Computer literacy.

Basic CPR.


Has broad, fairly detailed level of knowledge of a specific area.

Gathers, organizes, verifies, composes, and/or analyzes data in the completion of several defined, multi-step procedures.

May operate complicated equipment/machinery.


Makes decisions based on an analysis of facts and general principles.

In accordance with the nursing professional practice model, applies the nursing process in providing patient care.

Performs comprehensive physical/psychosocial assessment/evaluation of patients/family/ significant other.

Assesses data and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs.

Develops and implements patient care plans.

Evaluates and revises care plans in consultation with physicians and multidisciplinary team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Assesses patient’s responses and reports adverse reactions and or other pertinent information to healthcare team and physician.

Makes purposeful rounds to monitor patient responses, changes in condition and patient needs in accordance with the unit policy.

Intervenes as appropriate.

Prioritizes, plans, implements and evaluates direct patient care including physical, psychosocial and age-specific care of the patient/family.

Demonstrates organizational and critical thinking skills in management of patients.

Demonstrates competency in providing age appropriate care and culturally competent to defined patient population based on unit/area’s scope of service.


Directs and delegates patient care activities to appropriate skill level of staff.


Coordinates appropriate aspects of care including discharge planning and case management.

Supports and implements all measures to facilitate safe and timely patient throughput.

Attends discharge and team planning meetings.

Utilizes care coordination guidelines to facilitate discharge planning.


Develops, implements and evaluates teaching plans/protocols for patient/family/significant other.

Assesses readiness to learn.

Uses teaching tools such as teach-back methods, to implement and support teaching plan.

Evaluates and revises teaching plan based on patient/family needs.


Performs medical/surgical treatments accurately and according to procedures and National Patient Safety goals.

Administers medications and IV therapy.

Prepares IV admixtures when appropriate.

Performs ECG and phlebotomy as appropriate.

Initiate emergency procedures when necessary.

Adheres to policies and procedures regarding infection control.


Acknowledges and implements physician orders accurately and timely.


Documents patient information utilizing guidelines for charting by standards.

Performs computer order entry function and appropriate computer documentation.


Communicates effectively with healthcare team, ancillary services and community agencies to coordinate delivery of patient care.

Utilizes SBAR

Participates in huddles and bedside shift reports.


Demonstrates professional accountability, growth and development.

Attends in-services and continuing education programs as evidenced by documentation.

Maintains professional credentials, state licensure, and required competencies.

Serves on unit/hospital committees.

Participates in orientation and development of students and new employees.

Upholds ethical standards.

Works overtime as needed.


Enhances customer experience by anticipating patient/family needs and responding in a timely manner to requests.

Provides friendly assistance to patients, families and visitors using I-Care principles.

Functions as a patient advocate.

Acts as a liaison and support person to the patient/family.


Practices autonomously utilizing evidence-bases standards of care.

Participates in Performance Improvement activities.

Contributes to the quality of patient care by following unit, organizational and professional standards.

Has knowledge of community agencies, nursing homes, government/state regulations and hospital policies and procedures.

Follows protocol and provides appropriate care to patients in seclusion/restraints.


Hours per pay period: 80

Hours: 7:00am to 3:30pm or 11:00pm to 7:30am

Must be able to work every other weekend and every other holiday.
