Position Summary:The Patient Care Technician performs a variety of basic care services related to activities of daily living under the direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN) and/or licensed vocational nurse (LVN). The Patient Care Technician assists the nursing staff in providing patient care according to hospital policies and procedures. The Patient Care Technician accepts assignments on other units when necessary. The Patient Care Technician assists in maintaining a clean, well organized and adequately stocked patient care unit.

Essential Job Responsibilities: 1. Performs direct patient care. - Participates in providing direct care as directed, according to standards - Can work with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds - Communicates all findings in the correct/concise/clear written and or verbal format - Can recognize abnormal findings i.e. VS, Skin changes, I&O, etc. and reoprt findings to the nurse - Can recognize and respond appropriately in an emergency situation - Applies knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span to identify patient and family requirements relative to age-specific needs

  12. Acts as an orientation preceptor for new and cross-training PCT I employees
  13. Have knowledge of limited role of medication security, handling, storage and transport of non-narcotic medications under teh approval and direction of a supervisor

  21. Technical skills: PCT II

  22. ADLs: Feeding, hygiene, perineal care, ambulation, bathing, oral care, bedmaking
  23. VS, I&O, patient's weight using bed and chair scale
  24. Set up traction (i.e. Overhead and trapeze)
  25. Applying SCD machine & CPM machine (alignment, setting), TED hose, hot/cold application & polar care
  26. Skin care: application of non-medicated dressing and/or basic would care (non-medicated) such as decubitus care Stage I
  27. Assit patient with elimination (i.e. enema, non-medicated)
  28. Obtains noninvasive specimen: urine from catheter, sputum, waive testing - hemocult/gastrocult and accucheck
  29. Demonstrates proficiency in sterile and aseptic technique and maintains sterile field and reports any breaks in aseptic technique
  30. Foley care, proper position of indwelling foley and removal of foley catheter
  31. Removal fo peripheral IV and/or saline lock catheter
  32. Oral suctioning, Incentive Spierometry
  33. Returns patient to Nasal O2 setting after activity, application of pulse oximetry monitor
  34. Wound drains: tube measurement, emptying of drains i.e. JP, hemovac adn NG
  35. Mobility: positioning for comfort, ambulation with equipment and risk to fall observation
  36. Assist with restraints and patient transfers
  37. Emergency: participates in CPR and calls Dr. Leo, crash cart location, pediatric equipment location
  38. Transport patients to and from unit by wheelchair and/or stretcher
  39. Preparation of patient room for admission and orients patient/family to unit/hospital routine
  40. Removes equipment, supplies and medications after discharge
  41. ED: Application of orthopedic devices i.e. splints, slings, immobilizers, etc.
  42. Completes unit specific competency and age-specific competency requirements

  43. Maintains current professional knowledge and skills in accordance with established methods of the department:

  44. Attends 80% of staff meetings
  45. Attends 100% of mandatory meetings and inservices
  46. Participates in department QI activities

  47. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Must be able to demonstrate understanding of HCA's and St. David's "Patients First" safety initiative by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures. Adheres to isolation policies and procedures. Utilizes universal precautions at all times.

Works autonomously and with supervision. Interfaces with the public, physicians, staff, patients adn administration and ancillary/support department representative. Maintains confidentiality of patients medical records. Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Education and Experience: Required: High school diploma or GED equivalent Preferred: Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant program, Unit Secretary or transfer from a non nursing unit/dept. Prefer experience in an acute care hospital setting.

Licenses and Certificates: Required: BLS certification Preferred: Certified Nurses Assistant certification
