Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is seeking qualified candidates for a Program Coordinator II to join the Center for Food Security and Public Health (CFSPH). Working with Veterinary Specialists at the CFSPH, this individual will provide support for CFSPH related projects for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Veterinary Services (VS) National Preparedness and Incident Coordination Center (NPIC). This person will provide overall coordination and assistance to CFSPH and VS and will assist the CFSPH Program Manager already based in Riverdale, MD.

Responsibilities include development of resources to support emergency preparedness and response activities and continuous review and updating of CFSPH and USDA developed documents that are used by APHIS to support emergency preparedness and response activities. This individual will also assist with information management in the Emergency Management Response System during any foreign animal disease (FAD) outbreak, and support the Director of the National Preparedness and Incident Coordination Director in an FAD. The Foreign Animal Disease Preparedness and Response (FAD PReP) resources must be continuously reviewed and revised based on changes in science and actual disease outbreak situations. This individual will work with the CFSPH Program Manager in Riverdale, MD and CFSPH Veterinary Specialists in Ames, IA to develop new resources and assist in managing development of resources by others.

In addition to the above, the Program Coordinator II will be expected to review scientific literature, analyze reports, write after action reports and provide assistance in the development of policy and strategy documents.

The successful candidate will possess knowledge of emergency management procedures, public policy, and life sciences. Additionally, the successful candidate will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational, project management and team-development skills, be able to make independent judgments and follow instructions, possess the ability to function in a continually changing environment, be able to multitask and be self-motivated.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 2 years of related experience; OR a combination of education and/or related experience totaling 8 years unless otherwise specified under supplemental required education and experience. Experience must be at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of this position.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Masters in Public Health

  • Experience in emergency response and/or animal emergency management

  • Professional or practical experience with animal agriculture.

  • Demonstrated experience in public policy, public administration, public health, animal science, or epidemiology

  • Demonstrated experience in advanced editing, research, and writing experience with demonstrated interest in the field
