Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) and IT Services, at Iowa State University, is seeking applicants for a Director of Information Security. The Director is responsible for the leadership and strategic direction for the information security department and its support to University operations and activities. This includes the design, implementation, and maintenance of all controls, processes, and procedures used to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of the computer-based systems and networks across all technical platforms campus wide, as well as the supporting business processes. This position will collaboratively partner with all functions and levels campus wide to ensure the protection of information assets and their corresponding data, systems, databases, networks, and other technology resources. Information Technology (ITS) at Iowa State University provides core computing, network services, enterprise systems, and information security resources to students, faculty, and staff. ITS also collaborates with technology professionals campus wide to provide specialized IT resources to academic and business units.

The successful candidate will possess outstanding communication skills and interpersonal skills. The candidate will demonstrate proven success as a supervisor and leader; strong analytical, problem identification and resolution skills; the ability to communicate effectively among a diverse audience; and ability to participate as a member, or leader, of a cross-functional team.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 6 years of related experience; OR a Ph.D. or other professional degree and 3 years of related experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience managing and leading staff

Experience developing and implementing comprehensive strategic responses and recovery strategies, plans, and procedures

Experience identifying and mitigating information security risks in software applications, network and data center infrastructure, and access control procedures

Experience identifying systemic security issues based on analysis of vulnerability and configuration data

Experience leading and managing information security initiatives at a Research I institution
