The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) Dean of Faculty, Engineering Division anticipates filling the position of Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering (Geotechnical Engineering), beginning on 26 June 2017 and terminating on 30 June 2020. Subsequent re-appointments may be considered up to 4-years. This position is in the excepted civil service.

The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), located just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is an undergraduate institution that awards the Bachelor of Science degree as part of its mission to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead in the United States Air Force and in service to our nation. Faculty applications are invited from candidates who can contribute to this mission by interacting with cadets, both in and out of the classroom, as instructors and mentors. The student body consists of approximately 4,000 men and women representing every state and several foreign countries. The Academy faculty is an integrated group of military and civilian educators. The curriculum includes core academic and professional courses, and 27 disciplinary and interdisciplinary majors. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate core and major's civil engineering courses to officer candidates in the areas of Soil Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, Foundation Engineering, Design of Earth Structures, Transportation Engineering (pavement design, construction, and rehabilitation), and other engineering topics. The selected candidate will direct and perform research in Civil Engineering related projects and participate in academic advising, mentoring, accreditation reviews, and fulfill other departmental duties.

Required Qualifications:

A Doctoral Degree (to be completed by employment start date) in Civil Engineering, Geoenvironmental Engineering, Geological Engineering, Engineering Education, or related field.

Highly Desired Qualifications:

Applicants with a record of peer-reviewed research and publications as well as undergraduate and/or graduate engineering teaching experience; Leadership experience in curriculum development and academic assessment; and Professional registration and industry experience are highly desirable.

Candidates will be assessed based on their teaching credentials, scholarship, service, and education.

Successful applicants will possess personal attributes of integrity, cooperation, initiative, and breadth of intellectual interests.


You MUST provide copies of "OFFICIAL" transcripts for ALL levels of post-secondary education (Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees) being pursued or attained to support your educational claims. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Photocopies of "OFFICIAL" transcripts are acceptable for initial application submission. However, if selected you will be required to provide (original) copies of your "OFFICIAL" transcripts. For a transcript to be considered "OFFICIAL", it should be printed on university letterhead and the registrar's official seal/signature must appear on the transcript. Transcripts labeled "UNOFFICIAL" will not be accepted.


Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the educational requirements. However, you must show proof that the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in a conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying in the form of an "official" statement of U.S. equivalency from a Department of Education (DOE) approved (non-federal) agency (i.e. AICE, NACES), who will complete a U.S. Standard of Education Conversion.


The selected candidate will be subject to a security investigation leading to successful completion of a background investigation with a favorable adjudication. The selectee's failure to meet this requirement will be grounds for termination.
